Entering the home stretch in recruiting

Written by Jay Beck

National signing day is fast approaching with February 1st just over a week away when this year's prospects will sign their name on the dotted line, finally.

Gary_Patterson2As for the Big 12, the usual suspects once again are sitting atop the Big 12's ranks according to Rivals. Between Texas and Oklahoma, they have three 5-star and 22 four-star players committed.  And both appear to still be in play for Dorial Green-Beckham, the nation's number one ranked recruit along with Missouri, Arkansas, and Alabama.

Texas currently has the second ranked class in the country while OU is sitting at number eight.  (Just for comparison's sake, Scout also has Texas at number two but the Sooners at number 15).

TCU looks to be holding their own as they get set to move into the Big 12 next season.  They have the 23rd ranked class in the country at the moment which would slot them fourth in the Big 12 and third if you take Texas A&M out of the question.

As the two teams that finished first and second in the Big 12 this past season, Oklahoma State and Kansas State, the results have been mixed results thus far.  The Cowboys are holding their own with a class ranked 36th nationally highlighted by two 4-star prospects, QB Wes Lunt and WR C.J. Curry.

Despite a strong season, K-State continues to linger near the bottom of the rankings in the Big 12 ahead of only Kansas.  It's hard to say that's any cause of concern, however.  If there's one team that's proven that these rankings aren't worth a whole lot, it's Kansas State.  They've finished last in the Big 12 in recruiting in each of the 2009, 2010, and 2011 seasons but yet somehow managed a 10 win season this past year and probably should have been in the BCS bowl game.  Go figure.

Texas A&M and Missouri are set to enter the SEC in 2012.  The Aggies have what would be the third ranked class in the SEC.  While Mizzou has the 48th ranked class nationally, that's good for only 11th in SEC country.  They could certainly use a boost from a guy like Green-Beckham who still has the Tigers on his list.

Here's how the Big 12 looks at the moment according to Rivals.  You can see both Rivals and Scout's team rankings in the respective links.
