Charlie Weis completed his first Kansas coaching staff this week by adding DeMontie Cross has his linebackers' coach. They'll have their work cut out for themselves trying to turn around the worst team in the Big 12 the past two seasons.
Here's a rundown of who will be in the press box and roaming the sidelines next season in Lawrence.
Tim Grunhard - Offensive Line. He may have been coaching high school last several years, but this still should be a good hire. He knows the lay of the land since he not only coached high school at Bishop Miege, but he also played 11 seasons for the Chiefs. Who better to teach college offensive lineman their craft than a former NFL player?
Ron Powlus - Quarterbacks. Here's a blast from the past. Powlus quarterbacked the Fighting Irish in the mid-90's and will now take Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps under his wing. He spent the past two seasons coaching the QB's at Akron and also worked with Weis during his stint as Notre Dame's head coach.
Clint Bowen - Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach. This is a familiar name to anyone that has followed the Kansas football for any length of time. He comes in after serving one year as defensive coordinator for Dan McCarney at North Texas. But, he is from Lawrence, played and graduated from KU, and also has coached there for 12 seasons previously. It's always good to have a few alumni on staff. Smart hire by Weis, I'd say.
Reggie Mitchell - Running Backs Coach - Weis kept Mitchell from Turner Gill's staff and he'll continue coaching the running backs for KU. Has the reputation as a strong recruiter, something Kansas definitely needs more of.
Rob Ianello - Recruiting Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach - Why bring in a fired coach from Akron that was 2-22 as a head coach? Because he was on Weis' staff at Notre Dame. They know each other and he knows what Weis wants done on offense. He also has served as the recruiting coordinator at both Notre Dame and Arizona.
Dave Campo - Defensive Coordinator - Very interesting hire here. Weis said he wanted someone that could speak his language about the defense. Check. Now let's hope he can get the Jayhawks' defensive turned into a respective unit which is going to be a monumental task. On the bright side, they can't be any worse than they were last season so there's only one direction they can go, up.
Buddy Wyatt - Defensive Line Coach. He is another holdover from Turner Gill's staff. I'm lukewarm on this guy at best. He's been around the Big 12 at Nebraska and Texas A&M most recently, and I don't seem to remember either stint going especially well. I was a little surprise to see Weis keep him as one of the holdovers.
Jeff Blasko - Tight Ends Coach, Assistant Special Teams Coordinator. Don't know much about Mr. Blasko other than he worked for Weis during his year at Florida as his quality control coach. Blasko also worked under Ianello at Akron for a season. It's always cool to see a guy like Weis give a young coach his chance.
DeMontie Cross - Linebackers. A Mizzou grad coaching at Kansas? Yep, he comes over after spending one season on Wisconsin's staff following five years with the Buffalo Bills.
So there it is. Weis preached during his introductory press conference on the importance of having good chemistry on his staff, something he said he never got right while he was at Notre Dame. It's going to be tough to judge these guys for a year or two, but from the outside looking in, it's look to be an experienced staff if nothing else.
If I were to try and pick out any red flags, it would be the obvious; long time NFL guys running the offense and defense. We've all seen that fail at other places. Will it happen here? We shall see but the positive of that is that both Weis and Campo do have college experience, as well, so obviously this isn't either's first rodeo.
