That headline isn't a mistake. The athletic department at the University of Kansas sent out this tweet on Thursday afternoon announcing that none other than Charlie Weis would be announced as Kansas' head coach replacing Turner Gill.
Weis spent this season as the offensive coordinator of the Florda Gators, which followed one year as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, which followed five years as Notre Dame's head coach. Weis finished with a 35-27 record in South Bend but was just 16-21 in his last three seasons which ultimately cost him his job.
Why would Kansas want him? Well, we will find out tomorrow during his press conference, but ESPN's Joe Schad tweeted, Kansas believes Weis hire makes them immediately relevant," and Kansas AD Sheahon Zenger tells me "This puts Kansas on the national map." So Kansas football is now relevant and on the national map. All that won't exactly matter if Kansas doesn't win football games, however. It also doesn't appear that Weis has been in the best of health lately and one has to wonder whether he's up for the rigors that come with a head coaching job, including hitting the road recruiting, something he'll have to begin in earnest this weekend.
At this point, there are simply more questions than answer which may be coming at his introductory press conference tomorrow.
Adding to the fun is that it seems Weis' former boss, Will Muschamp, didn't even know he had interviewed at Kansas. That should be an awkward conversation when they finally talk.
