Good morning. The spread is out and ready to go. It's week number two. Here's a little bit of everything happening in the Big 12 on Saturday. Take a little or take a lot, but I'd recommend filling up on everything you can. It'll be another long day and that's never a bad thing. Starting with a good, solid base is always the key in making it through the day in an upright position.
Former Big 12 mates Texas A&M and Missouri begin life in the SEC for real this afternoon. Georgia visits Columbia while Florida heads to College Station. I'll take Georgia over Missouri and Texas A&M over Florida. I'm guessing what we find out over the course of the season is that Alabama and LSU are great and the rest of the SEC isn't much different than any other conference.
Kansas goes for win number two against Rice. KU also started 2-0 last season before losing the final 10 games of the season. Somehow, someway, I think they'll get to three or four wins this season assuming they win today.
Iowa State and Iowa meet today in Iowa City. Cyclones, just leave the Cy-Hawk trophy in Ames where I think it's staying for another season. Steele Jantz, baby!
Is Texas State pulling off their second big upset of the season by beating Texas Tech? One word answer, No.
Kansas State can start quieting its doubters today against Miami. The Hurricanes aren't great, but they'll be a good test for Bill Snyder's crew. Kansas State's defense is better than people are giving it credit for and that will show today.
Oklahoma is offering their game against Florida A&M on pay-per-view for $39.95 which should help cover the reported $650k Florida A&M it receiving to watch the Sooners run up and down the field.
Texas takes on New Mexico on Saturday night and is currently a 39.5 favorite. Bob Davie has a long ways to go rebuilding a program that has won just three games over the prior three seasons. They'll be back in that state of Texas against next week when they visit Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State's season finally gets underway for real with their trip to Arizona on Saturday night. The game is on the Pac-12 Network and so far, it doesn't look like anyone in Oklahoma will be able to see the game. This morning's announcement that Dish Network has reached an agreement to carry the network is probably good news for Cowboy fans though.
West Virginia and Baylor have the weekend off. It's probably not the optimal time for a bye but it beats Oklahoma's schedule who will have two byes in the next three weeks after today's game.
Are there any upsets on the horizon today? I'm not seeing any unless you call Iowa State beating Iowa as an upset. The Hawks are currently 3.5 point favorites. Kansas State is probably the most likely to fall among the Big 12 teams that are favored. The Wildcats are seven point favorites over the Hurricanes.
Enjoy the games today and thank you for taking a minute to stop bye. We'll be back with Closing Time sometime late tonight or tomorrow morning. Until then, stay hydrated and of course, have a safe Saturday.
