Kansas Had a Rather Interesting Start Against South Dakota State

It was just like Charlie Weis drew it up. Have Dayne Crist throw it deep on the first play of the game to get some momentum going right out of the shoot. “I was throwing it deep on the first play for months,” Weis said. “I was trying to please the fans.” Crist completed the pass to Kale Pick for a gain of 43 yards and the Jayhawks were off and running. Except they weren't.

What Weis didn't anticipate was missing a 34 yard field goal after the drive stalled at the SDSU 17 yard line.

The surprises didn't end there, either.

After KU picked up a first down on their second possession, they were forced to punt three plays later. No big deal, especially since Kansas punter Ron Doherty pinned the Jackrabbits at the one yard line.

But then this happened.

Ninety-nine yards later, Kansas found themselves in a 7-0 hole and defensive coordinator Dave Campo wondering what the heck just happened.

Weis certainly didn't see it coming.“I see them pinned back, (and) I’m expecting we’re going to get good field position,” Weis said. “I’m already laying out the plan as if we’re going to get the ball in plus territory. Next thing I know I hear a roar. I turned around and see that guy right in my face, taking it to the house.”

Kansas fans surely had nightmarish flashbacks to the past two seasons and the game was barely five minutes in.

Things would indeed get better from there though.

Take out that 99 yard run and the KU held the Jackrabbits to 105 yards rushing the rest of the game giving up only 10 points the final three-an-a-half quarters.  Kansas held only two opponent under 17 points the prior two seasons.

Kansas goes for win number two next week against Rice who fell to UCLA 49-24 in their opener.  Kansas opened as 9.5 point favorites over the Owls.
